Network Calculations for Gas, District Heating and Water Networks

For gas, water, and district heating utilities, PSIcontrol also provides extensive network calculation functions which are integrated in the control system. Depending on the task, steady-state, quasi-steady, and non-steady network calculations are required:

  • For steady-state network calculations, the time dependency of the network state is not considered. Steady-state network calculations are typically used for calculating water networks and low pressure gas networks.
  • For quasi-steady network calculations, a sequence of steady-state calculations is performed. Within the calculation period, the switching states and infeed/outflow volumes can be modified. On the basis of these sectional and time-independent hydraulic network states, the transport processes such as quality and temperature tracking as well as water age can be calculated. Quasi-steady network calculations are used especially for calculation of district heating networks as well as of water networks and low pressure gas networks.
  • For non-steady network calculations, the actual flow state is modeled in dependence on time. This allows consideration of network fluctionations and pressure surges. Quality tracking is also possible for non-steady network calculation. Non-steady calculations are used for the calculation of high pressure gas networks and pipelines. For non-steady network calculations, we are using the calculation model PSIganesi of our sister business unit PSI gasgrids and pipelines.

PSIcontrol provides the following scope of functions for pipe network calculations:

  • State estimator and state observer,
  • Cyclical forecast simulation,
  • Forecast simulation,
  • Steady-state simulation,
  • Planning simulation.
